There are many people who think that if their article or website is not “keyword” rich, they will not achieve a high ranking on the various search engines. Because of this there are some articles that become so bogged down in keywords and phrases that they do not even make sense. It is important that we remember what the true purpose of keywords and phrases are and take some simple steps to use them to their maximum potential.
Keywords and phrases are not entities unto themselves. The keywords and phrases you use in an article or on your website are supposed to support the content and information of that article. Your goal is to increase visitors to your website which will increase your ranking on search engines. If the articles and advertising you are submitting for the public to view does not make sense to them, they are not going to click to visit your site even if it is keyword rich.
Some keywords and phrases do not make sense. Just because you used a software program or was advised that certain keywords and phrases are searched alot, does not make them appropriate to include in an article. If your suggested keyword phrase is city+word+word, and you do not live in that city, do business there, or even know where it is, it is not appropriate for your article. When someone reads your article, they are not going to visit your site just because the name of a particular city is there. In some cases it will be a turn-off to people who may have a football team that plays against that city, or has had a bad experience in that city.
Don’t “make” the article fit the keyword or phrase. We are often asked to write articles around certain keywords and phrases. Perhaps your service is rebuilding ships and you come across a keyword like the Titanic. Yes, the Titanic needs to be rebuilt, but it has nothing to do with your business or the service you provide. Why waste a readers time trying to squeeze the keyword Titanic into an article that is supposed to be related to what you do? This kind of article is not going to motivate readers to visit your site. They may be moved to go to the Titanic site however, because they have seen the word no less than ten times in the article. Your article needs to have relevant content that educates and shares information about your business and what you do. That is what will motivate the reader to visit your site and will increase your search engine ranking.
What makes a keyword or phrase. On any given day keywords and phrases change in Internet world. This is because people need to research different information or look for different things on a daily basis. Some keywords, and these are the same words you use every day, do not change. They are also a part of our everyday vocabulary and do not require a lot of effort to find or use. If you’ve selected a keyword or phrase during finals week at all the major universities, you are going to be stuck with words that are not normally used. They won’t make sense to the average person and won’t be easily translated into your business. The article will also have a very short shelf life because the words will not be used again as soon as finals are over.
Use keywords and phrases that will extend the life of your piece. Internet time is very fast and most articles do not stay relevant very long. You can help to extend the life of your article by using appropriate keywords that will be used for a while. When selecting keywords think about what you Google or yahoo when you are looking for a product or service. Do you type in one word? A phrase? A couple of words? These are keywords. Keywords are not some magic spell given to us by the mighty crawler magician. They are just plain old words that the majority of people use to find something.
It is important that we keep keywords and phrases in their proper context. They are a tool that can be used effectively or, they can effectively destroy the chances of increasing visitors to your site. If you are contemplating writing an article or having one written for you, you want to use keywords effectively and appropriately. This means using a keyword that is relevant to your business in the title of your article and using keywords used everyday by people who use your service in the body of the article. Make your articles work for you and use keywords and phrases as they are meant to be used, as part of your winning strategy. Remember that keywords and phrases are not the only winning strategy and must be used wisely.
